SAQA-NEQM QUILT SHOW OPENING JANUARY 20, 2011

Hi bloggers,

News from the most recent museum meeting. The museum will be closed only two weeks in January. Our opening date and reception date have been set. January 20, and January 22, are the dates. Please post them on your calendar. I will be there both dates. I just will not be able to help myself.

The dates we have confirmed for the workshops, lectures, and trunk shows are as follows. If there is snow the following Saturday will be available!

o January 29
o February 5
o February 12
o March 5
o March 19
o April 9

If you are interested please check the yahoo site after the 15th of July to pick up a copy of the short form we are requesting our presenters fill out.

In the mean time Celeste Janey, Bobbie Sullivan, and I are working out the details and are hoping to hear from you shortly. Not to worry we will post the email address or just ask you to fill out a form from the yahoo site, one that will go automatically to the Adobe tracker site and we can download them.

I have lots more details and we will share them at the August meeting.
Regards,
Ms. V

No Holds Barred

Great day!

I hope you are working on one of your three pieces for the up coming Exhibition. It may seem like a lot of time between now and the mailing date...end of Oct. but it really isn't.

If you have not completed your first piece you should be heading towards it's start or completion by now. For a really fine piece of work with all the I's dotted and the T's crossed you need to spend a few hours a day or week to make the deadline, depending on what you are making.

A really fine work of art does not have a size limit. However keep in mind that there are spaces for large, medium and small works. We really want you to stretch and make the most of the time we have available. I hope you plan to attend the August meeting in Lowell, a little bird told me we may have a guest from SAQA. More on that when I get the confirmation!

Keep creating and check the yahoo postings from time to time. If your region is having a meeting post it on the blog and some of us from other areas of New England will try to make it!

Also check the older posting I have updated the name on all, may have missed one, and updated the dates due.

Regards!

No Holes Barred - Comments on title...

Well now, No Holds Barred, makes you think, now where have I heard that before.
It was not selected as a theme but really "ANY THING GOES" as long as it fits the museums and SAQA's definition of a quilt. The final say on that will of course be the venue as it will be hung in their museum.

Here is the definition of a quilt from SAQA;s website:

SAQA defines an art quilt as a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.

NE Quilt Museum's definition: "The traditional quilt definition is that it has 3 layers (top, filling and backing) and has stitching that holds the layers together. That definition allows for tying or tacking, machine or hand quilting. It also would allow all of the quilts in "Masters" including the Dollar Bill which had 3 layers with sugar packets for filling. I think this definition allows quite a lot of latitude!" Laura Lane, NEQM's Acting Curator.

The hope was that advertising would be easy and fun if we used a title that was able to touch on other sports this makes one think of boxing, wrestling, and sailing if the emails I have received are anything to go by. If this title stirs your creativity and makes people take a second look or think twice than we have hit the mark, made a hole in one, knock it out of the ring or box, and are sailing in the right direction.
