A huge thanks to all who participated, supported, encouraged, ran errands, picked up supplies, and stayed up late keeping all who worked tirelessly and were able to make the deadline. There is so much that goes on in the background that folks miss but is not going unsung here today. Again thank you all who went for it. Results…There were 115 quilts entered by fifty two artists. Our artists reside in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
We had a note worthy group of seasoned professionals who participated in the jurying. As the process went from beginning to end of the submissions - numerous times, a harmony of works began to form. While the process was everything I hoped for regrettably all entries could not be juried in.
There are plans being worked out right now to produce a catalogue. Watch for exciting news and the special way we plan to acknowledge all our artists. We are all excited and pleased with the way this exhibit is coming together. We hope that you will be able to attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 29, 2011. Watch for News from the NEQM about all the events that will take place during the exhibit. Come out and see your works in the museum. Come out and support your fellow SAQA members.
Warmest Regards,

Journey's end in sight
I wanted to post a message about Celeste Janey, our travels, and the wonderful welcome we have received all over New England.
As many of you know I am not able to drive at the moment and Celeste has graciously driven me to the four corners of New England to speak to SAQA members in person about the upcoming Exhibition, No Holes Barred. We have traveled for a full year sharing particulars about the Exhibit.
There have been many questions about the show and as we get closer and closer to the entry deadline many of the questions have been about the guidelines. There are what they are and every show has them.
One of our committee members was bothered about some of the posts and I reminded her that every exhibit whether it is a local guild, a gallery, a traveling show, national or international, or even world class museums, each has it own particular rules and regulations.
We were very lucky to have an entire year to work on our pieces for this show. Some of us started right away and others thrive in a last minute situation that produces remarkable works. Either way we are nearing that year long journeys end.
Thank you for your enthusiasm, welcome, the great food, and the support and friendship you have shown us both. It would have been much harder if we had not been received with such open arms and hugs.
It is my hope that the remaining days are spent pulling a rabbit or a dove out of your magic hats along with ribbons, strings, holes, and amazing quilted pieces.
Thank you again for playing, for sharing, for entering, and for making this one of the best experiences both Celeste and I have had on the road.
Warmest regards, Ms. V

That definition allows for tying or tacking, machine or hand quilting. It also would allow all of the quilts in "Masters" including the Dollar Bill which had 3 layers with sugar packets for filling. I think this definition allows quite a lot of latitude!" Laura Lane, NEQM's Acting Curator.
And by SAQA, (SAQA defines an art quilt as a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends).
• Artwork may be published in a catalog of the exhibition if sponsorship is found.
• Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to the New England Quilt Museum (NEQM) in Lowell, MA as well as the cost of return shipping and insurance. Shipping must by either UPS or FedEx. No Holds Barred
I hope you are working on one of your three pieces for the up coming Exhibition. It may seem like a lot of time between now and the mailing date...end of Oct. but it really isn't.
If you have not completed your first piece you should be heading towards it's start or completion by now. For a really fine piece of work with all the I's dotted and the T's crossed you need to spend a few hours a day or week to make the deadline, depending on what you are making.
A really fine work of art does not have a size limit. However keep in mind that there are spaces for large, medium and small works. We really want you to stretch and make the most of the time we have available. I hope you plan to attend the August meeting in Lowell, a little bird told me we may have a guest from SAQA. More on that when I get the confirmation!
Keep creating and check the yahoo postings from time to time. If your region is having a meeting post it on the blog and some of us from other areas of New England will try to make it!
Also check the older posting I have updated the name on all, may have missed one, and updated the dates due.
Regards!

No Holes Barred - Comments on title...
It was not selected as a theme but really "ANY THING GOES" as long as it fits the museums and SAQA's definition of a quilt. The final say on that will of course be the venue as it will be hung in their museum.
Here is the definition of a quilt from SAQA;s website:
SAQA defines an art quilt as a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.
NE Quilt Museum's definition: "The traditional quilt definition is that it has 3 layers (top, filling and backing) and has stitching that holds the layers together.
The hope was that advertising would be easy and fun if we used a title that was able to touch on other sports this makes one think of boxing, wrestling, and sailing if the emails I have received are anything to go by. If this title stirs your creativity and makes people take a second look or think twice than we have hit the mark, made a hole in one, knock it out of the ring or box, and are sailing in the right direction.
